At Wilkerson Chiropractic, we take great pride in providing the finest chiropractic wellness care to our patients. Below is a sampling of the different chiropractic services we offer in our Lompoc office.

Spinal and Extremity Adjustments

Chiropractic adjustments balance your spine, normalize joint function, relieve stress on your DSCF2490.JPG muscles, ligaments, tendons and nerves and restore your body's natural healing ability.

Adjustments are used to remove subluxations (which are joints that are fixated, "locked up",not moving properly) in the spine and other joints of the body.

Chiropractic adjustments are extremely safe. Children and even newborns get adjustments to repair spinal misalignments caused by the birth process, learning to walk as well as other childhood traumas.  Each adjustment is tailored according to each patient's age, size and unique spinal problem.

The benefits of spinal and extremity adjustments include:

  • Correction of subluxations
  • Releases "pinched nerves"
  • Pain relief
  • Improved flexibility and range of motion
  • Decreased muscle spasms
  • Restoring the body's natural healing ability

Sacro-Occipital Technique (S.O.T.)

SOT.jpg (13905 bytes)

S.O.T. stands for Sacro Occipital Technique (or Technic). "Sacro" means "related to, or associated with," the sacrum. The sacrum is the foundation for the spine. The sacrum is often called the tail bone though this is not exactly correct. "Occipital" means "related to or associated with the occiput. Occiput means "the back of the head". So, S.O.T. is a method of normalizing the relationship between the foundation of the spine and the top of the spine. It is this relationship and how these two bones get along with one another, that has been proven to be so important in the normal functioning of the brain and spinal cord. The word "Technic" is another way of spelling "technique". Either word means "the way to get the job done, scientifically and in a short period of time".

How is S.O.T. different than ordinary chiropractic?

S.O.T. (Sacro Occipital Technique) is composed of highly accurate and effective procedures. Dr. Major B. DeJarnette spent most of his life conducting clinical investigation into what works in chiropractic and what makes chiropractic work. Many of the experiments he first tried on himself so that he was aware of the results first hand. He also recruited others to be patients while he tested the procedures. By means of these repeated, peer-reviewed tests, he determined the true nature of the spinal subluxation* and how it could most efficiently be corrected. He also determined when the correction of the spinal subluxation was not enough and devised visceral manipulation procedures. Visceral procedures are used to help normalize organ function without the use of drugs or surgery.

S.O.T. also recognizes the important role of normal cranial function in health and disease. The cranial bones and other cranial structures can cause central nervous system problems that are often overlooked or ignored by most other chiropractic systems.

*Spinal subluxation: A disorder of the spinal, pelvic or cranial bones which is interfering with, or prohibits the correction of, the secretion, fluctuation and absorption of cerebro spinal fluid.

Exactly what function of the body does S.O.T. correct?

S.O.T. concerns itself primarily with the cranial sacral respiratory mechanism. This is a wavelike oscillation in the covering of the brain and spinal cord. Although quite subtle, this motion is essential for the normal functioning of the brain and spinal cord, and thereby the rest of the nervous system and the rest of the body. It functions much like breathing air, in that it has a cyclic tightening and loosening phase. Ordinary respiration - breathing air in and out - also affects and can be used to normalize cranial sacral respiratory action. The normal function of the cranial sacral respiratory mechanism is recognized as a primary function of life in the body and must be normal if all functions of the body are to be normal.

Like other chiropractic techniques, S.O.T. also corrects abnormal spinal mechanics and any associated nerve problems. These can include back pain, headaches, dizziness, arm and leg pains.

Activator Method

This technique has grown to be the most widely-used "low force" chiropractic technique in the world. The Activator Technique incorporates the latest advances in orthopedic, neurological, and chiropractic examinations along with a unique system of administering spinal adjustments. Using the Activator analysis and the Activator instrument, Dr. Wilkerson can help restore spinal balance, safely and comfortably.

The ArthoStim is the latest innovation in low force instrument adjusting. The ArthroStim delivers 12-14 incremental thrusts per second. By dividing the energy of a single thrust into rapid, successive inputs, the ArthroStim modulates the peak force of the adjustment. This allows Dr. Wilkerson to administer an extremely comfortable and highly effective adjustment.

The ArthroStim permits Dr. Wilkerson to maintain the effectiveness of your adjustment while reducing the amount of force that is applied. This dynamic combination allows our office to maintain a wider range of patients and conditions.

Individuals that may especially benefit from the ArthroStim include:

  • Infants and young children
  • Elderly individuals
  • Individuals in acute pain
  • Individuals who dislike being "cracked"

Flexion -Distraction is an excellent technique for the treatment of middle and low back pain. It is a gentle and extremely effective technique that helps to decompress the spine and remove pressure on the vertebral disc. In addition it restores range of motion to the spine and realigns the vertebrae.
Dr. Marc Wilkerson applies this technique for the treatment of:

  • Bulging or Herniated Discs
  • Myofascial Pain
  • Numbness or Tingling
  • Osteoarthrisis or Degeneration of the spine
  • Radiculitis or Nerve Pain
  • Sciatica
  • Spinal Stensis
  • Scoliosis

Flexion-distraction technique has become the most widely used approach to treating symptomatic disc injuries involving back pain and the often-accompanying leg pain. Flexion-distraction involves the use of a specialized table that gently distracts or stretches the spine and which allows the chiropractor to isolate the area of disc involvement while slightly flexing the spine in a pumping rhythm. There is no pain involved in the treatment.

Theoretically, the tractioning or distraction of the disc combined with isolation and gentle pumping of the involved area allows the central area of the disc, the nucleus pulposus, to assume its central position in the disc. Flexion-distraction is thought to improve disc height.

Flexion - Distraction is the treatment of choice for those patients suffering with back pain. Most patients experience relief after 3 to 5 treatments. The treatments are comfortable and performed on a fully adjustable ergonomic table that can be fit to all body types including pregnant woman. Flexion - Distraction should be considered for those whose pain has not responded to other types of care... this treatment can make all the difference in removing and managing your pain.

VibraCussor percussion therapy is an exciting new treatment approach for muscle and ligament problems and related myofascial conditions. The VibraCussor delivers waves of percussive impulses deep into the tissues of the body to promote an increase in circulation and lymphatic flow as well as a decrease in muscle spasm. The accumulation of the multiple percussive waves helps to loosen up "stuck" areas without using heavy thrusting forces.

The VibraCussor can also be used to gently change the flexibility of shortened ligaments, which in turn can increase limited ranges of motion and improve postural distortions. This treatment is also highly effective in treating fascial adhesions and restrictions of the shoulder, hip and knee with minimal discomfort.

VibraCussor therapy can be an effective treatment for the following conditions:

  • Joint Fixations
  • Postural distortions
  • Myofascial restrictions
  • Trigger points
  • "Frozen" shoulder
  • TMJ (jaw) problems
  • Many more conditions
